Sweden was the first European country to issue banknotes. When the Palmstruch bank failed in 1668, it was saved by the Swedish state while the debt was transferred into a “bad bank”. Thus, Sweden became the first country to experience a modern-style financial crisis, and it also founded, by accident, the first central bank globally.
